Pope Francis to be welcomed by President Iohannis at the airport
Pope Francis will be welcomed at the airport by President Klaus Iohannis on Friday, at 11:25hrs, with the official welcoming ceremony to take place at the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest at 12:05hrs according to a press release by the Presidential Administration.
Pope Francis will pay a visit to Romania as of Friday, May 31 to Sunday, June 2 upon the invitation of the Romanian President, who extended the invitation since May 2015, on the occasion of the the 25year-anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Romania and the Holy See.
“Subsequently, the invitation was renewed in March 2017 through President Iohannis’ letter to His Holiness!“, reads the Presidency’s press release.
The Romanian head of state and Pope Francis will have tête-à-tête talks, and after that, starting 13:05hrs His Holiness will have meetings with the state authorities, the representatives of the diplomatic corps and of the civil society. President Iohannis and Pope Francis will deliver speeches in front of around 400 guests.
“Romania’s President considers that Pope Francis’ visit in Romania is a happy occasion to bring together Orthodox, Roman-Catholic and Greek-Catholic Christian believers. President Klaus Iohannis will be next to His Holiness attending religious ceremonies for every religious cult”, the press release further says.
The religious ceremony held by the Romanian Orthodox Church at the National Redemption Cathedral in Bucharest starts on Friday at 17:00hrs.
The Roman-Catholic Mass will be celebrate at St. Joseph Cathedral in Bucharest as of 17:55hrs.
Pope Francis and President Iohannis will also attend the Greek-Catholic Mass in Blaj, on the Liberty Plain, where the beatification ceremony for those Greek-Catholic martyr bishops will also take place.
Pope Francis will leave Romania on Sunday, at 17:30.hrs.
Tough security measures are enforced at the “Henri Coanda” International Airport these days due to Pope’s visit, with the representatives of the airport warning passengers to take more time before arriving at the airport on Friday.
Traffic restrictions are also enforced in Bucharest today, while classes are suspended.
