Priest Cristian Pomohaci, accused with recruiting minors for sexual purposes, was expelled from the church, the Alba Iulia Orthodox Archdiocese decided on Friday.

After we judged the case of father Pomohaci, we decided his defrock, meaning he lost the statute of priest for good. The decision was approved by His Holiness Irineu, is enforceable, but not irrevocable. It can be challenged to the Metropolitan Church within 15 days,” said father Oliviu Botoi, the cultural adviser within the Orthodox Archdiocese of Alba Iulia.

Such a decision was expected in father Pomohaci’s case as he hasn’t defended himself in any way and has not answered any request made by the Church to present evidence in his defence, he has practically accepted what had happened,” said in his turn, the Romanian Patriarchy’s spokesperson, Vasile Banescu.

The Prosecutor’s Office upon the High Court of Cassation and Justice has taken over the case opened by the prosecutors of Targu Mures, with Cristian Pomohaci being charged with sexually corrupting minors.

The case was revealed after an audio recording of about 22 minutes had been released on the Internet, featuring an alleged discussion between priest Cristian Pomohaci, who is also known as a folk music singer, and a 17-year-old teenager. According to the recording, the priest would have hit on the boy and would have proposed him to have sex with him in exchange for money.
