An inmate at Bistrita Penitentiary has attempted suicide Thursday morning, while his cell colleagues were protesting on the prison’s roof.
Hundreds of inmates at 20 penitentiaries throughout the country have refused food on Thursday. At Botosani prison several are protesting on the roof, others shout at the windows hitting the grills with various objects. Incidents were registered during the night at Margineni, Tulcea, Bacau.
According to a release from the National Administration of Penitentiaries (ANP) the inmates at Botosani Penitentiary protesting in the courtyard have abandoned the protests, five persons remained in the roof.
ANP informs that food was refused by inmates at the penitentiaries: Iasi – 124, Poarta Alba – 2, Oradea – 3, Miercurea Ciuc – 15, Giurgiu – 1, Vaslui – 56, Bucuresti Jilava – 6, Tulcea – 68, Bistrita – 133, Deva – 6, Aiud – 27, Bacau – 43, Margineni – 45, Arad – 1.
Ten inmates at Targu Mures Penitentiary have turned down food.
At Margineni, mattresses were set on fire in one cell, no victims were registered.
At Bacau, inmates have set on fire textiles and hit the grills, shouting slogans.
At Vaslui maximum security penitentiary 56 inmates have refused food. They were conducting peaceful protests and there was no need for gendarmes to intervene. At Vaslui Penitentiary, one of the most modern ones in the country, the inmates shouted from the windows: “Down with Pruna”, “Down with the government”, “We are not given visits, no ratios, no rights”, “We are treated like dogs, help us, if you leave they’d kill us.”
According to sources, the Vaslui Penitentiary is built according to European standards, being inaugurated in 2012. The cells have 3-4 beds, have a TV set and own bathroom with hot water showers. Each floor has a dining room and library, gym, recreational rooms.
Against Wednesday the number of hunger strikers is lower (113 inmates were on hunger strike on Wednesday evening).
