Prosecutor Adina Florea withdraws candidature for the Special Section leadership

Prosecutor Adina Florea has withdrawn her candidature for the chief prosecutor of the Special Section for Investigating Magistrates. The Head of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), Lia Savonea, has had seven failed attempts to name Adina Florea at the helm of this controversial section, slammed both by the Romanian magistrates and by the international bodies.
Adina Florea won a contest to occupy this position, but the results of the contest needed to be validated by the CSM plenary sitting.
Lia Savonea put the validation of the results on the agenda of the CSM seven times, each time without success. Part of the CSM members boycotted the plenary sitting, so the quorum was not met. In other previous sittings, there was a “tie” in voting for and against Florea.
In June this year the Venice Commission urged the Romanian authorities to drastically limit the emergency ordinances, a draft opinion regarding GEO 7/2019 and GEO 12/2019 reads, while also saying that the reasons for establishing the Special Section for Investigating Magistrates (SIIJ) are unclear and that SIIJ is obstructing anti-corruption fight.
Adina Florea has been repeatedly proposed to replace Laur Codruta Kovesi as the anti-corruption chief prosecutor this year, but President Iohannis rejected the proposals.
