Protesting Farmers and Truckers Demand Immediate Solutions in Talks with Government
Protest request in Victorie Square, Bucharest, denied.
Protesting farmers and truckers express their desire to actively participate in discussions with government representatives to address the issues raised. They assert that they will not leave the streets until concrete and immediate solutions are found. On Tuesday, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Sorin Grindeanu, will meet with representatives of employer confederations and representative federations of road transporters.
“We appreciate the Government’s efforts to initiate tripartite social dialogue between employers, employers’ organizations and local and central public administration authorities. In this sense, we express the desire to actively participate in these discussions, emphasizing that the farmers and transporters present in the street on this 7th day of spontaneous protest want to be an integral part of the process of solving the problems reported to the Government and the authorities. It is important to emphasize that, as farmers and transporters, we are not here to negotiate, but to obtain solutions and solutions to the problems we face. We reject the idea that these actions could be interpreted as negotiations, but they are a firm approach in order to find concrete and immediate solutions“, said farmer Ionuţ Cercel in Afumaţi, Antena3 reports.
He added that the protests will continue until they see the first normative act to find applicable solutions, to solve as many reported problems as possible.
“We reiterate our thanks for opening the dialogue. We express our hope that the discussions will lead to effective measures to improve the living and working conditions of farmers and transporters in Romania. We will continue the protests in a peaceful and civilized way, dissociating ourselves from any act of vandalism and violation of the law. We will continue until we see the first normative act to find applicable solutions, to solve as many reported problems as possible, solutions that we do not want to see with a negative impact from an economic and social point of view”, said Cercel, who he read a statement “symbolically signed by ‘protesting farmers and transporters'”.
“Today, January 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., at the headquarters of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, there will be a meeting between the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Sorin Grindeanu, and the representatives of employers’ confederations and representative federations of road carriers”, announced the relevant ministry.
Bucharest mayor denies protest request in Victoriei Square
The request of transporters and farmers – who are in the seventh day of protests – to organize a protest in Piața Victoriei was rejected because “it is not reasonable”, announced the general mayor of the Capital, Nicușor Dan.
Nicușor Dan made this announcement on Facebook, explaining that transporters and farmers had requested the full occupation – from Friday to Monday – of Victoriei Square and the adjacent streets, for 15,000 cars and machines.
“Obviously, the entire transport would have been blocked in Bucharest. The largest authorized protest with cars took place in 2017. The 3,800 cars were arranged then in Piața Victoriei and along Kiseleff Boulevard, but without blocking traffic,” Nicușor Dan also explained.
He also said that the right to protest is enshrined by law, but without disrupting the normal functioning of public roads or public transport. “We will approve any protest request that respects the law, as we have done so far,” the general mayor of the Capital added.
