Protests announced on Sunday in Victoriei Square: ‘Alert! GEO 13 is back!’

Romanians are preparing to go back to protests in Victoriei Square on Sunday because of fears that PSD leader Liviu Dragnea will force the Dancila Government to adopt an emergency ordinance on amnesty and pardon, as he tried to with the GEO 13 in February 2017.

“Alert! OUG 13 is returning! No amnesty, no pardon!” is titled a Facebook event to popularize the rally on July 15, as of 18:00h in Victoriei Square, ziare.com informs.

Florin Iordache confirmed for ziare.com that emergency ordinances can be issued until July 19, because the Parliament is in activity, although practically many MPs have already gone on holiday, so there is a fear that Dragnea will force the Dancila Government to come with a new GEO in the coming days.

Protests against the amendments to the laws of justice and the criminal codes by the PSD-ALDE ruling coalition have been held constantly in Victoriei Square in Bucharest, but also in other cities in the country, but the largest ones were occasioned by Emergency Ordinance 13, in February 2017, when hundreds of thousands of people went to the streets.

According to sources, PSD Chairman Liviu Dragnea would be keen to force the adoption of an emergency ordinance on amnesty and pardon, G4Media.ro informed on Friday. Reportedly, there is opposition from within the PSD, as Prime Minister Viorica Dancila is against a GEO and threatens to resign.

The Government can adopt an emergency ordinance until Thursday, July 19, when the Parliament’s extraordinary session ends. If the GEO is adopted outside the extraordinary session frame, the summoning of Parliament within 5 days is needed to that the GEO comes into force.

The same sources claim that the PSD MPs have been requested to stay by the phones during the holiday, in the event of summoning an extraordinary session.

It is not the first time when Liviu Dragnea wants to use GEO for amnesty and pardon, the first attempt was in February 2017, when former PM Sorin Grindeanu opposed and then hundreds of thousands of citizens protested in the streets.

Liviu Dragnea was sentenced in the first court to 3 years and 6 months in jail, serving sentence, in the file of fictitious employments at the Child Protection in Teleorman County.
