Raed Arafat, head of the Emergency Situations Department (DSU), said on Thursday that the RO-ALERT system will also announce storms and other major weather phenomena.

“We have established with our colleagues at the National Meteorology Administration (ANM) that a number of situations, such as major-risk storms, which from code orange code turn into code red, heavy hail and other situations to be announced. The meteorologists inform us and we can issue the RO-ALERT message in that area,” Arafat said.

The DSU chief also said the procedure would be completed by May 6. In addition, Raed Arafat also said that a hotline will be established between the weather forecast center and IGSU.

In turn, Elena Mateescu, ANM general manager, said that besides storms that have the potential to turn into tornadoes, RO-ALERT will also announce blizzards or abundant rainfall that can cause floods.
