Romania Accounts for 20% of All Drowning Deaths in the EU
In the European Union, 5,004 deaths by drowning were reported, of which 1,033 occurred in Romania, according to Eurostat data for 2021 published on Tuesday.
Romania is by far the leader in this chapter, followed by France, with 653 drowning deaths, Poland (466) and Germany (457). The lowest number of drowning deaths were reported in Luxembourg (1), Malta (3) and Cyprus (9).
The number of drowning deaths is increasing across the European Union. In 2021, the year from which Eurostat’s latest data comes, there were 532 more than in 2020.
The breakdown by gender shows that the share of drowning deaths is twice as high among men than among women, in almost all EU countries. The exceptions are Austria, with 33 drowning deaths among men and 19 among women, and Malta, one man and two women.
In Romania, of the 1,033 drowning deaths reported in 2021, 700 were men and 333 were women.
