Romania faces further demographic aging
The population of Romania, according to residence, was on July 1, 2015 of 22.243 million people, down by 0.3% against the same period a year before, while the population’s aging has increased, individuals 65 and over exceeding by almost 168,000 the young people between 0-14 years, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS) on Friday.
On July 1, 2015 the urban population was of 12,549,000 people, down by 0.3% from the beginning of July 2014.
According to INS, the female population was of 11,385,000, less by 0.3% as compared to the same time last year, while the average age of the population was 40.8 years, by 0.2 years higher than 1 July 2014.
On the other hand, the demographic aging process has deepened this year against July 1, 2014, pointing out a slight decrease in the share of young people (0-14 years) and an increase of 0.3 percentage points in the share of elderly population (65 and over). Demographic aging index increased from 101.9 (July 1, 2014) to 105.1 (July 1, 2015) elderly to 100 young people.
In terms of share in the total population, on July 1, 2015, the age group 35-39 years (8.6%) was on the first place.
