Romania Has the Worst Pollution in the EU
Only seven countries met the World Health Organization’s (WHO) air quality standards last year, according to data released on Tuesday, and scientists warned that the war on smog would become harder to fight after the United States halted its global monitoring efforts, Reuters and AFP reported.
Romania is the most polluted country in the EU. More precisely, our country ranks 66th in the list of the most polluted countries in the world and is, according to IQAir, the most polluted country in the European Union.
Top most polluted countries in the world
1. Chad
2. Bangladesh
3. Pakistan
4. DR Congo
5. India
6. Tajikistan
7. Nepal
8. Uganda
9. Rwanda
10. Burundi
“Most countries have several other data sources, but (this decision) will significantly affect Africa, because these were often the only sources of real-time air quality data publicly available,” commented Christi Chester-Schroeder, representative of IQAir.
In 2021, air pollution – atmospheric and indoor – was the leading environmental risk to health, responsible for 8.1 million premature deaths worldwide, according to estimates in the “State of Global Air 2024” report produced by two American institutes (Health Effects Institute and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation).
