This year, Romania will join the ranks of “super-aged” countries, where over 20% of the population will be over 65, according to Visual Capitalist data. Alongside Romania, Switzerland, South Korea, Canada, and Taiwan will also fall into this category.

In Moldova’s villages, for example, there is hardly a street without new but empty houses. Young people have left to work abroad.

Such a village is Liesti, Galati county. Iulian Boţ, mayor of the commune said: “People over 65 years old are 30%. It is a worrying thing both in our country and in the whole of Europe. At one point, in a census, we had 380 children studying abroad, because the parents left first to Italy, then Spain, England, Germany. They had been gone for 20 years, they had small children, now I think they got married, I don’t know if the children are coming back.”

A country’s aging population means a shrinking workforce and pressure on pension and health systems. Monaco tops the list with 36% of its population over 65.
