Romania remains in second place in the world ranking based on the total number of medals won at the International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI), with three silver and one bronze medals won this year, the Ministry of Education reported on Sunday.

In Szeged, Hungary, the award ceremony of the 35th edition of the International Olympiad of Informatics took place, an edition in which 351 competitors from 90 countries participated.

“This year, too the Romanian team achieved an extraordinary result – 3 silver medals and a bronze medal entered the country’s record, thanks to the efforts of some exceptional young people: Alexandru-Raul Todoran, Aurel Vlaicu Theoretical High School, Orastie – silver medal; Luca Perju-Verzotti, Tudor Vianu National College of Informatics, Bucharest – silver medal; Andrei-Robert Ion, International High School of Informatics, Bucharest – silver medal; Alexandru Luchianov, International High School of Informatics, Bucharest – bronze medal,” the ministry informed in a Facebook post.

Thus, Romania continues to hold second place in the Hall of Fame of the International Olympiad of Informatics, with 127 medals (33 gold, 58 silver, 36 bronze), tied with Poland, China ranking first.

The Romanian team was led by the representatives of the Society for Excellence and Performance in Informatics (SEPI): Prof. Dan Pracsiu – Emil Racovita Theoretical High School, Vaslui, Team Leader, and Tamio Vesa Nakajima, PhD student, Oxford University, UK – Deputy Leader.

“We must also note the rise to the Hall of Fame of Alexandru Luchianov. With four medals at the International Olympiad of Informatics, he becomes one of the most titled Romanians in the history of this competition, placing 29th in the Hall of Fame world ranking. Throughout our participation in the IOI, only two Romanians managed to obtain better results,” the Ministry of Education mentions.
