The Romanian authorities signed, on Wednesday, in Ploieşti, a memorandum of understanding between the National Company Romarm S.A., Electromecanica S.A. and Raytheon Missiles & Defense, a document based on which Electromecanica Ploieşti and Raytheon will manufacture SkyCeptor interceptor missiles in Romania.

The military conflict on the Romanian border has shown us that the development of public-private partnerships with the defense industry between NATO and the European Union is the structure on which the defense industry must operate in the long term,” said the Minister of Economy , Florin Spătaru, on Wednesday morning, in Ploieşti, during the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between the National Company Romarm S.A., Electromecanica S.A. and Raytheon Missiles & Defense, held at Electromecanica Ploieşti headquarters.

The memorandum is just a first step in developing the long-term strategic partnership between Electromecanica Ploieşti, Romarm and Raytheon, the Minister of Economy added.

“Production also means investments from Romania and what I assured the director of Electromecanica and the general director of Romarm is that the Ministry of Economy is determined to invest, to allocate money for the development of this capability so that Romania can position itself both nationally, as well as at European level, as a stable supplier and as a reliable supplier in this field. The use of these missiles in the conflict in Ukraine, we certainly cannot discuss such a thing because such a process will take time,” Florin Spătaru also stated. He explained that after the memorandum was signed, the interceptor missiles would be delivered on the domestic and foreign markets.

In his turn, the Minister of National Defense, Vasile Dîncu, stated that he would like to “multiply hundreds of times” an event like the one on Wednesday in Ploieşti, in which Romania not only acquires weapons, but also signs memoranda by which capitalizes on the “intelligence” of Romanians and the infrastructure in the field of defense.

The DefMin also said that the Romanian defense industry has “all the internal energies” to become an important part of the national economy again.

“I strongly believe that the signing of this memorandum means more than a business commitment, it is the beginning of a long-term partnership between all of us, it is a consolidated cooperation relationship with the Romanian industry, already built on an existing foundation and a strong partnership with the Government. Romania in the field of defense. Your visionary leadership made it possible to sign this memorandum of understanding, and together we bring the production of long-range defensive missiles to Romania. SkyCeptor is a low-cost, long-range interceptor designed to protect against ballistic and cruise missiles and is intended for future integration with the Air & Missiles Defense system,” said in his turn Wesley D. Kremer, President of Raytheon.
