Romanian engineer kidnapped in Nigeria, released

The Romanian citizen who had been kidnapped in Nigeria was released, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) announced on Wednesday evening.

MAE thanked the authorities in the Crisis Cell and the Nigerian authorities for the involvement and support provided in this case.

The Ministry reiterated the firm recommendation addressed to the Romanian citizens in conflict areas or in areas with major security risk to contact the nearest diplomatic mission of Romania in order to register their presence in the region, so that they can benefit of consular assistance and protection as efficient as possible.

At the same time, MAE reminded the need to check the information supplied both through the “Travel Safely” application, which can be downloaded on any type of smartphone, and the SMS alert system corresponding to the information campaign “An SMS can save your life”.

The Romanian engineer Christian Nedelcu, 52, has been abducted by gunmen who swooped on him and others in Delta State.

The expatriate and his team were kidnapped at Railway Village in Owa Oyibo, Agbor, Delta State, dailypost.ng reports.

There was an exchange of sporadic gunshots at the scene of the incident between security escorts of the Romanian and the abductors after which the engineer was taken.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer, Delta Police command said that the incident happened at late hours of Monday and a search is ongoing in the village for the abducted engineer.

According to Delta Police spokesperson Celestina Kalu, the Romanian was employed by the construction company Dextron Nigeria.
