Romanian Orthodox Church’s profits – millions of euros
The Romanian Patriarchy and its dioceses reported last year to the Ministry of Finance total profits of about EUR 7.5 million, accounted for as surplus money, because the Romanian Orthodox Church structures are non-profit legal entities, gandul.info reports.
The most efficient diocese of the Romanian Orthodox Church (BOR) is the Archdiocese of Bucharest, which registered a profit of EUR 1.67 million in 2014, followed by the Metropolitan Church of Moldavia, by the Diocese of Slobozia and Calarasi and by the Archdiocese of Timisoara. Only two dioceses were on the red last year: Craiova reported a minus of EUR 2.3 million, and the Diocese of Severin and Strehaia registered a loss of over EUR 75,000.
Not all the BOR dioceses have submitted their balance sheets to the Ministry of Finance. There are no public financial data about BOR entities carrying out strict economic activities. For example, Basilica Travel Agency, the pilgrimage agency of BOR, reported a profit of around EUR 115,000 in 2014.
