Sea mine hit the pier in Costinesti and exploded

The authorities in Constanţa intervene, on Monday, following a strong explosion produced in the sea, in the area of ​​the pier in front of the Forum Hotel in Costineşti. The first data show that it is a marine mine, and a team of divers specializing in the destruction of explosive devices will intervene at the scene.

It is not the first incident of this kind produced in the territorial waters of Romania, since the invasion of Russia in Ukraine, on February 24, 2022.

A team of EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) divers, specialized in the destruction of explosive devices, will intervene. At this time, divers are heading to the scene of the incident with a Coast Guard vessel.

“The wind blows hard from the sea to the shore, and the sea is rough. It will be a difficult intervention. (It is a high-risk operation. (…) These sea mines they are a danger not only to navigation, but also to shore activities,” said the representative of the Naval Forces.

According to him, since the start of the war in Ukraine, divers have neutralized 5 sea mines in Romania’s area of ​​responsibility.

“There was a strong explosion. I was on a terrace, I saw a lot of black smoke. We were told something exploded. The police and fire department are here. Some tourists are still in the water,”a tourist who witnessed the event told Digi24.

The first information shows that there are no injuries and no material damage.

According to the police and rescuers, no one was injured, but the danger has not passed and that is why the Coast Guard and all those who intervene are on the alert, because in the same area, near the pier, there is another one floating on the water.
