Second injured miner in Lupeni coalmine gallery collapse dies
The miner hospitalised at Floreasca Emergency Hospital in Bucharest has died Friday evening, SMURD Bucharest coordinator Bogdan Oprita has informed.
Oprita said the patient was the victim of an extremely serious crush syndrome, a syndrome that resulted in a number of changes in the entire body functionality.
Friday afternoon the doctor was saying that the miner has suffered kidney failure following the crush and that he was to undergo surgery.
“The patient needed to be stabilized and mechanically intubated. The main problem is that the entire organism has suffered generalised traumas we are trying to solve,” Doctor Bogdan Oprita was saying.
Three miners were caught underground following a mining gallery collapse Thursday afternoon at Lupeni mine in Jiu Valley, with several rescue crews being called to the site. Two have been eventually saved after 12 hours, while a third one died. The two saved miners wer conscious, but one of them is in serious condition and was transported to Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest.
After the collapse, 11 out the 14 miners managed to get out.
