The medical staff of the St. Maria clinical hospital in Bucharest has undergone a second lung transplant on the night of Monday to Tuesday. The pulmonary bilateral transplant, the second ever done in our country, has saved the life of a 47-year-old patient suffering of bronchiectasis.

The hospital announced the man is currently in the intensive care unit and has a favorable evolution after the surgery.

A hospital press release, signed by manager Narcis Copca also announces that “patients who are eligible for a lung transplant can address the pulmonologist doctors in the country, in order to be evaluated and subsequently put on a waiting list at St Maria Hospital.”

The first lung transplant in Romania has been made in the “St. Maria” hospital in Bucharest two weeks ago, a medical first in our country, amid controversies, coming one day after the row between former Health minister Vlad Voiculescu and Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea over the money invested in the “St. Maria” hospital to become a transplant center and the fact that no transplant has been made there in the past year, as announced by the Bucharest mayoress in 2017.

The patient who benefitted of the first lung transplant performed in Romania is 37 years old and he is from Iasi. He has been living connected to the breathing apparatus for three years. He has filed for a lung transplant abroad in 2015.
