2014: Over 650 Romanian girls became mothers before turning 15

Almost 18,600 girls under 19 have become mothers last year, with 662 of them under 15. Most of them come from the countryside, reveals a report issued by the Health Ministry.

In 2014, 18,595 girls under 19 gave birth to children, most of them- 12,399- coming from the countryside and 5,534 from the city. 662 out of those 18,600 girls were under 15 when they became mothers, with 449 living in the countryside and 213 in the city, Digi24 reports, quoting Mediafax.

13,329 new pregnant girls under 19 have been tracked down last year, with 654 of them under 15 years old and 12,675 aged 15 to 19.

Among the pregnant girls under 15 last year, most of them were from Iasi (67), Calarasi (62), Dolj (54), Mures (34), Bacau (32), Sibiu (28), Arges (27), Vrancea and Giurgiu (20 each). Tulcea is the only Romanian county that hasn’t reported any pregnant girl under 15.

Most of the pregnancies tracked down at girls aged 15 to 19 have been registered in Dolj county (1,443), Bistrita-Nasaud (821), Iasi (782), Mures (499), Vaslui (489), Bacau (448), Prahova (338), Sibiu (336) and Constanta (333).
