Cloud of Saharan dust over Romania, Bucharesters’ cars covered by reddish dust

The cloud of Saharan dust has already reached Romania on Wednesday. Western country has been the first affected by the Saharan dust rain. The cars and trees in Resita, but also in other areas of Caras Severin county have been covered by a reddish dust in just several minutes.

The cloud has also reached Bucharest, with locals discovering their cars covered by the same dust this morning.

Romanian weathermen announced it will temporarily rain in the southern and western regions of the country, with rains enabling the dust laying, so the concentration of the dust particles being yet diminished in Romania.

The cloud comes mainly from Algeria and has already covered major areas of Spain, Switzerland, southern Italy, Malta and the western Mediterranean islands. On Monday, the wind pushed dust to northern Italy and southern France, and expects it to reach Ireland. According to Severe Weather, the Saharan dust cloud will also reach the northern part of the European continent, the UK and Ireland.

Saharan dust is a mixture of sand and dust from the Sahara, the vast desert area that covers most of North Africa.

The wind can blow strongly over deserts – whipping up dust and sand high into the sky. If the winds in the upper part of the atmosphere are blowing north, the dust can be carried as far as the UK.

Once it is lifted from the ground by strong winds, clouds of dust can reach very high altitudes and be transported worldwide, covering thousands of miles.

In order for the dust to get from up in the sky down to the ground, you need something to wash it out of the sky – rain. As raindrops fall, they collect particles of dust on the way down. Then when the raindrops land on something and eventually evaporate, they leave behind a layer of dust.
