The Romanian Army has warned twice on Sunday that Romanians are being bombarded on TikTok and other networks with false images, meant to induce panic, claiming that the borders are closing and war is imminent.
In a second statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Defense (MApN) warns that “these gross forms of manipulation and mystification of the truth clearly fall into the pattern of disinformation campaigns supported, recently, by state actors with an agenda contrary to Romania’s sovereignty and against NATO, with the role of maintaining a state of uncertainty and inducing panic among public opinion.”
“This time, the Romanian borders and port infrastructure are targeted. The first of the two identified posts falsely accredits the idea that Romania’s borders will be closed and secured with military personnel, and the second, also without any connection to reality, presents military equipment, which is not in the Romanian Army’s equipment, as being concentrated in the Port of Constanta – the location of the filming having no connection to this port, this being “proof”, the authors of the disinformation claim, of war preparations. All this information is false! We reiterate that these crude forms of manipulation and mystification of the truth clearly fall into the pattern of disinformation campaigns supported, recently, by state actors with an agenda contrary to Romania’s sovereignty and against NATO, with the role of maintaining a state of uncertainty and inducing panic among public opinion. The communication structures of the Ministry of National Defense will continue to report cases of disinformation of public opinion, as these situations are identified,” said MApN.
In a previous statement, the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) drew attention to new attempts at disinformation in the online environment, especially on the TikTok platform, regarding the so-called imminent preparations for the recruitment of young people between 18 and 35 years old or the mobilization of reservists with a view to sending them to the front in Ukraine. MApN emphasizes that this information is completely false and does not reflect reality.
The Ministry of National Defense also reported that various recordings of military equipment movements, made in previous days, are falsely presented as current, namely from December 7.
An example of this is the images captured on the morning of December 1, in Bucharest, which show the movement of tanks and armored vehicles from the Romanian Army and allied troops. These images, filmed on the occasion of the Military Parade, are distributed as current and mislead users of the platform.
The ministry drew attention to the fact that these manipulations are distributed with the aim of creating uncertainty and panic among public opinion, often being supported by state actors with an agenda contrary to Romania’s sovereignty and against NATO. The Ministry of National Defense stated that it will continue to monitor and report disinformation campaigns in the online environment.
