One student dead, several others injured after a wall collapsed at the boarding school in Odorheiul Secuiesc

A wall of the “Tamasi Aron” High School boarding school in Odorheiu Secuiesc, Harghita county, collapsed, on Monday, on top of four children between the ages of 15 and 17. Three of them were pulled out from under the rubble by firefighters and transported to the hospital. The last victim pulled from the ruins, a 17-year-old boy, died.

According to the Department for Emergency Situations, after the collapse of the boarding school in Odorheiu Secuiesc, a boy died, a girl is intubated and will be transported to a hospital in Târgu Mureș, while two other teenage girls are conscious but have suffered various traumas.

The building that partially collapsed on Monday afternoon in Odorheiu Secuiesc belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese, and the Odorheiu Secuiesc City Hall pays over 300,000 lei in rent annually. In the part of the building that collapsed, there were rooms where the students staying at the boarding school were accommodated.

The building where the boarding school operates was built in the period 1909-1910, just like the high school.

“The third victim removed will be transported to Târgu Mureș. He was in a coma. The medical team is concerned about her condition. The other two victims: one was in shock but OK, the other had minor injuries. We do not know how many children were in the boarding school. In total, 97 children were accommodated, until 17.00 they had free activity, and luckily most of them were in the city, not in the building. The four were in the building. The girls on the first floor, the boy in the basement. I didn’t talk to the school management, as everyone was concerned with saving the victims,” the spokesperson of the Odorheiu Secuiesc City Hall, Zörgő Noémi, told Antena 3.

The Minister of Education, Ligia Deca: “We will do everything within the ministry to provide all the help that will be needed. Asked about the condition of the building, built in 1910, Deca said that it was not known exactly if it was classified as a seismic risk, but that the responsibility of strengthening such buildings rests with the local administration. “I don’t have data about the building’s situation, I want to see who the owner is, to see what works were authorized. Local authorities can apply for funds to strengthen buildings with seismic risk I and II. Something like this must not happen again.”

The student who died after the partial collapse of the boarding school building in Odorheiu Secuiesc, Harghita county, was found with the help of a rescue dog. The teenager was conscious during the rescue operation and communicated with the firefighters, but lost consciousness after being pulled from the rubble. The doctors started resuscitation maneuvers, but were unable to save his life.

David was a handball player at the city club and would have turned 18 on December 25, according to Observer News. The boy was raised only by his mother, according to Fanatik.

The police have opened an investigation in this case.
