Hundreds of people gathered in Victoriei Square in Bucharest on Saturday evening to mark one month since the violence during the Diaspora rally on August 10. It has been an unusual protest, with no slogans chanted, where the crowd enjoyed the music of pianist Davide Martello who performed his symbolic piano recital. Martello, known for his performances in conflict zones ,arrived in Victoriei Square with his piano pulled by a bicycle.

Focus on the future, not on the present, for the present doesn’t last long, was Martell’s message when asked what is his message to the Government of Romania.

People are paying the rulers to do their job and if they are not doing it, they don’t belong in government. If we make children, we don’t want to be afraid to raise them in poverty. We must stand united as Europeans, it’s about united people who are helping each other. I know it is a very difficult moment. Corruption has no place in Europe. So, we’d better focus on the future, for if you focus on future we focus on children, the pianist further said, as quoted by Digi24.

No slogans have been chanted on Saturday in Victoriei Square, while masks against tear gas have been shared so that people could remember the moment of the riot police’s intervention in force.

The protest, entitled  “A taste for freedom” has been announced in Facebook to mark one month since the violence during the Diaspora rally of August 10. “We must meet in the same place to prove them there are many of us, united and strong, and that the taste for freedom cannot be removed either be tear gas, batons or water cannons. At the same time, it is a good opportunity to show them we are still seeing them, we know that their only concern is to issue an emergency ordinance on amnesty and pardon and we won’t allow that”, the organizers said.

Davide Martello, also known as Klavierkunst is a German pianist of Italian descent. He is known for travelling around conflict zones to play his moving self-made grand piano. Martello has previously been recognised by the European parliament for his “outstanding contribution to European cooperation and the promotion of common values”. According to his website his aim is to play in every capital of the world with his grand piano.

Davide Martello performed in Afghanistan, in Taksim Square, also at the Maidan revolution in Kiev and the civil war in Donetsk, at the sites of the Ile-de-France attacks and rode his grand piano by bike to the Bataclan theatre (the venue where 89 people were killed in a terror attack).
