Romania will contribute with 70 police officers, six special vehicles, two patrol ships and 50 tents and recipients to manage the migrant crisis in Greece, the Romanian Interior Ministry informed on Sunday.

The decision was decided following the European Council’s meeting held in Brussels during March 17th-18th, in the context of implementation of the Turkey-EU agreement on the management of migration. Romania was represented by president Klaus Iohannis.

The representatives of the specialized bodies of the Interior Ministry attended a video conference with the representatives of the European Commission, of EU members states and of the international institutions such as FRONTEX, BESA and EUROPOL, presenting the ways that Romania can offer its support.

So, Romania will join the European aid to manage the migrant flow from Greece with 60 border police officers, 10 experts on asylum procedures, 6 special vehicles, two patrol ships and logistics equipment consisting of 50 tents and recipients. The Romania’s entire contribution is operational as of next week.

President Klaus Iohannis stated on Friday that the European Council’s decisions concerning Turkey do not add migrant quotas for Romania. “The relocation from Turkey to the EU is made within the previously approved quotas,” he said after the Council’s meeting in Brussels.

Iohannis explained that the agreement is to return to Turkey the future migrants who reach the Greek islands, on a case-by-case decision based on analysis and observing the European and international legal framework.
