US missile destroyer USS Cole heading to Black Sea, stopover in Constanta February 9-12

USS Cole (DDG 67) was to enter the Black Sea on Sunday in order to promote peace and stability in the region. Destroyer USS Cole will make a stopover in Constanta Port during February 9-12, as part of a visit within the Romanian-US Strategic Partnership.

Cole’s presence in the Black Sea will serve to reaffirm the US dedication to commitment towards strengthening the partnerships and joint operational capabilities amongst US, NATO and regional Black Sea partners.

“The United States remains fully committed to our NATO Allies and regional partners throughout Europe. We maintain our ships and submarines deployed across the Mediterranean, north Atlantic and into the Black Sea. These deployments not only provide our crews the opportunity to train and exercise with our allies and partners at sea, they also make it possible to conduct port visits where we strengthen our relationship and mutual understanding,” stated in a release Vice Admiral James Foggo, US 6th Fleet commander.

During the stopover in Romania, there are scheduled joint trainings with Romanian soldiers and official visits to various objectives of the Romanian Navy.

“After completion the American destroyer’s stopover in the port of Constanta, Romanian and American soldiers will carry out joint exercises at sea, with the crew of the frigate M?r??e?ti, mine sweeper Slt.. Alexandru Axente and a IAR 330 Puma Naval helicopter”, a press release issued by the State Romanian Navy Staff on Sunday informs.

USS Cole (DDG-67) vessel is a US Arleigh Burke-class guided multi-role destroyer, capable of destroying missiles, aircrafts, submarines and ships.

The vessel was previously patrolling in the Black Sea in October. In 2000, the destroyer USS Cole was the target of an al-Qaida attack, 17 of the sailors on board having died back then.
