In the first half of 2023, just over 73,000 children were born in Romania, the lowest number of newborns in 145 years.Experts attribute this decline to various factors, including the increasing education and career pursuits among women, improved access to contraception and family planning, declining infant mortality rates, and shifting economic conditions that influence lifestyle choices.

As living standards rise, so do the expenses associated with raising a family, posing financial challenges for parents who aspire to have larger families.

In response, ClubulCopiilor.ro has undertaken a study to determine the cost of raising a child in Romania. The study, which focused on assessing the minimum cost of raising a child from birth to age 19 in an urban family in Romania, highlights the financial responsibilities faced by parents.

The cost of raising a child in Romania is RON 384,991; the cost of raising a second child is RON 257 625.
The total cost of raising a child born in 2024 adjusted for inflation is estimated at 594 070 RON for the first child and 417 989 RON for the second child.
For parents planning to have two children, the total cost is projected to be at least 1 million RON until they finish high school. However, it’s important to note that this cost is spread over 19 years, which may alleviate some initial concerns.
The starting point of our study is an excellent analysis made in 2018 by Syndex Romania and the Quality of Life Research Institute, which calculated the minimum consumption basket for a decent living for the Romanian population.
As part of the research, Syndex Romania and the Quality of Life Research Institute determined the necessary quantities and minimum prices for food, clothing, footwear, personal hygiene and household products valid in 2018. Clubulcopiilor.ro used these prices in its analysis, adjusting them using the annual consumer price indices provided by the National Institute of Statistics.
