Border policemen from Piscu Vechi checkpoint in Dolj county have caught nine Syrian citizens who attempted to illegally enter Romania, with a Bulgarian citizen helping them cross  the Danube river by motorboat.

The Syrians, who paid an Arab-born citizen USD 8,000 for each of them to help them get to Germany, have been surrendered to the Bulgarian Border Police.

Border police officers say they have tracked down ten persons going from the Danube to the protection dam. Four men, four women and a child have been taken into custody. They didn’t speak Romanian and had not ID papers.

One of them didn’t conform to the legal summons and ran to a forest nearby. He was detained several hours later by the policemen in Calafat.

Those nine persons initially detained are Syrian citizens, aged from 10 to 62, while the tenth persons taken into custody later on is Bulgarian Petar A. aged 40.

The Syrians confessed they had paid USD 8,000 each to an Arab-born citizen whom they had met in Instabul a month ago and he had promised to take them in Germany. The migrants have travelled by minibus up to the Bulgarian border, where they have been taken over and crossed the Danube. Bulgarian Petar A. has taken them over on the Romanian shore.

Also on Wednesday, the border policemen from Arad have caught 17 citizens from Iraq and Iran, mostly asylum seekers in Romania, who planned to illegally cross the border to reach a country in the Schengen area.

Those 17 people- two women, eight men and seven children- were taken to the Border Police precinct in Nadlac. The adults were aged from 23 to 56, while children were aged from 2 to 17.
