Five individuals have been arrested in Romania: four Lithuanians and one Colombian, all accused of drug trafficking.

A record amount of 2.5 tons of cocaine was seized by police on July 1 in a container in Constanta Port, on a vessel coming from South America and Romania was a transit country on the way to the European market.

Sources among the investigators said that the estimated market value of the 2.5 tonnes of cocaine is of EUR 625 million. Five people, foreign nationals, were detained by investigators.

A quarter of the captured cargo was brought to the DIICOT headquarters, in 50 bags, loaded in three cars. The event was attended by DIICOT prosecutors and by the Directorate for Fighting Organised Crime with the Romanian Police.

It was the largest drug seizure in the port of Constanta.
