The Conservation Carpathia Foundation is launching the Small Grants program for the year 2024-2025, dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs and local businesses in the Făgăraș Mountains area. The financing program, part of the Carpathia Fund, has the main purpose of supporting projects that promote a nature-based economy and contribute to the long-term conservation of the Făgăraș Mountains.

The Carpathia Fund is a funding initiative launched by the Conservation Carpathia Foundation to financially support micro and small businesses around the Făgăraș Mountains. Through the small grants program, the organization aims to support the development of a sustainable economy that responsibly uses local natural resources and contribute to the creation of a National Park in the Făgăraș Mountains.

“Through the Carpathia Fund, we want to offer real and concrete support to local communities, promoting initiatives that value nature and contribute to the sustainable development of the Făgăraș Mountains. Small businesses can become the engine of a nature-based economy, exploiting natural resources in a responsible way,” said Istvan Szabo, Green Business Development Director, Conservation Carpathia Foundation.

The Carpathia Fund supports projects and activities in all the communes around the Făgăraș Mountains and the Leaota Mountains. The communities that benefit from support through the Carpathia Fund are:

Turnu Rosu village, Sibiu

Argeș: Dâmbovicioara, Rucăr, Valea Mare Pravăț, Lerești, Domnești, Nucșoara, Arefu, Sălătrucu, Dragoslavele, Stoenești, Cetățeni, Bughea de Sus, Berevoești, Albeștii de Argeș, Miorele, Mățău

Vâlcea: Perișani, Boișoara, Câineni

Sibiu: Turnu Roșu, Racovița, Avrig, Porumbacu de Jos, Cârțișoara, Arpașu de Jos

Brașov: Ucea, Viștea, Drăguș, Sâmbăta de Sus, Lisa, Recea, Hărseni, Șinca, Șinca Nouă,  orașele Făgăraș și Victoria

Dâmbovița: Pucheni, Runcu, Moroeni

Project target:

The Carpathia Fund aims to support local businesses in carrying out projects that bring direct and indirect economic and social benefits to the Făgăraș Mountains. In 2024, the Fund has 50,000 euros, and the funding for each project varies between 2,500 and 5,000 euros. Applicants must contribute 10% of the total project budget.

The projects must target the following areas of activity:
• Creation of nature-based products and services.
• Improving conservation communication.
• Increasing nature-based skills and employment.
• Improving nature-friendly business practices.

Eligibility Criteria for Projects:

To qualify, projects must adhere to strict criteria regarding registration, geographic location, and relevance to the established themes, including:

  • Being registered enterprises operating in the Făgăraș Mountains area.
  • Having a connection to the Făgăraș Mountains and being active in ecotourism, food production, or crafts.
  • Holding necessary licenses for the activity (operating authorization, ascertainer certificate, food safety notice).
  • Having a project duration not exceeding 8 months and completing by April 30, 2025.
  • Addressing at least one of the four specified themes.
  • Non-deductible VAT being eligible for non-VAT paying companies, but not for those registered for VAT purposes.
  • Ensuring a minimum of 10% co-financing in cash from the project budget.
