Eugen Preda, the leader of the clan that stolen weapons from a military unit in Ciorogarla in 2009, has been released on parole from the Focsani penitentiary. Preda had file two requests for release on parole, under the compensatory appeal law. Judges admitted the two requests and prosecutors didn’t challenge them.

Preda was released from prison on Tuesday night, leaving without giving any statements to the journalists.

Eugen Preda, known as the chief of the Sportsmen’ clan, was sentenced to 12 years in jail, serving eight years and nine months.

He used to be a sportsman at the Dinamo Club and he was also police agent for a while. His name is related to the unprecedented weapons’ theft from a military unit in Ciorogarla, Ilfov (near Bucharest).

According to the organized crime prosecutors, Preda and his clan stole 62 fire arms (a machine gun, submachine guns, TT pistols and other types of pistols), and other military equipment. At the same time, prosecutors established that the members of the sportsmen’s clan were involved in trafficking 124 kilos of heroine in 2009, with the value of the drugs mounting to EUR 2.5 M.

Preda was sentenced in a final ruling in December 2013.
