The population of Romania is 21.8 million people, but almost 3 million are not in the country

The population of Romania, calculated according to domicile, reached 21.873 million people on July 1, 2023, down 0.3% compared to the same month in 2022, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), published on Friday.

On July 1, 2023, Romania’s population by domicile was 21.873 million people, 0.3% lower than on July 1, 2022, Statistics reported on Friday. The population by domicile represents persons with Romanian citizenship and domicile on Romanian territory, which also includes emigrants. According to the INS, the resident population of Romania is just over 19 million inhabitants.

Official statistics reveal that, in the urban environment, the population was 12.239 million people, down from July 1, 2022 (-0.8%). At the same time, the population by domicile in rural areas was 9.634 million people, increasing by 0.3%, compared to the reference period. According to the cited source, on July 1 of this year, the female population stood at 11.2 million people, decreasing by over 34,000 people, from year to year, while the male population was 10.673 million people, with over 35,000 people less.

INS data show that the demographic aging process has intensified compared to July 1, 2022, by increasing by 0.4 percentage points the share of the elderly population (aged 65 and over) and by the slight decrease, by 0.1 percentage points, of the share of people young women (0-14 years). At the same time, the demographic aging index increased from 121.1 (on July 1, 2022) to 124.9 elderly people per hundred young people (on July 1, 2023).

According to the INS, in the analyzed interval, the average age of the population was 42.4 years, 0.3 years higher than on July 1, 2022, and the median age was 43 years, increasing by 0.4 years. At the beginning of July this year, the largest share in the total population was held by the 45-49 age group (8.5%). Among males, the share of this age group was 8.9%, and among females, 8.2%. The share of the 0-4 year old group was 4.5%, lower than that of the 5-9 year old group (4.9%) and the 10-14 year old group (5%). On January 1, 2023, the resident population was 19,051,562 people, increasing by 9.1 thousand people compared to January 1, 2022.
