The second case of infection with Zika virus – a child who came to Romania from French Guyana

The Ministry of Health has received confirmation of a second case of infection with Zika virus, this time a child of 10 years being infected, who lives with his family in French Guyana and has come to visit his relatives in Romania.

On July 19, at 21:45h, the Ministry of Health received confirmation of a second case of Zika virus infection of a Romanian citizen abroad, the institution informs.

“It is a 10-year-old boy who lives with his family in French Guyana for almost two years. The child arrived in Romania on July 12 to visit his relatives. A day later showed the following symptoms: fever, skin rash and myalgia. The symptoms disappeared within 24 hours. On July 15 he came to the Hospital for Infectious and Tropical Diseases ‘Dr. Victor Babes’ in Bucharest. Given the symptoms and the fact that he lives in an area with active transmission of this virus, the child was hospitalized. Discharge from hospital occurred on July 18, and all specific recommendations were handed to his family. On July 19, the results confirmed the Zika virus,” a press release reads on the website of the Health Ministry.

According to the source, the Ilfov County Public Health Department has sent information Wednesday morning to the mayor of the locality where the boy’s family lives and to the County Council, with recommendations for the implementation of anti-mosquito treatments.

The first case of infection with the Zika virus was confirmed in Romania on July 12, the case of a woman aged 27, living in Bucharest, who was hospitalized for two days at Victor Babes Hospital in Bucharest after returning from a trip to Martinique.
