Three inmates have been released from the Giurgiu Penitentiary by mistake, based on the law 169 on compensatory appeal.

Two of them have been already found and re-incarcerated, while a third one is still missing, being sought now. The head of the Giurgiu Penitentiary Marius Fulga said the release was due to an error of the calculation of the jail time days. The director argued it was a human error, as the amount of work is extremely high in the penitentiary.

“It was a human error on the calculation of the prison days. The amount of work is practically very high and this error occurred. The three files where the error happened will be checked, a committee will conduct the checks and then we’ll decide the measures,” Fulga explained.

He also pointed out the all the inmates released by mistake are Romanian citizens. His remark came after the president of the Penitentiary Trade Unions, Sorin Dumitrascu had said that one of the prisoner is foreigner and had already left Romania.

In her turn, the spokesperson of the National Administration of the Penitentiaries, Cristian Enache, said that an entire building of the Giurgiu Penitentiary had been incorrectly classified as building with improper conditions, although it had been recently rehabilitated.

529 inmates have been released from prison in the first day when the law on the compensatory appeal has come into effect. Other 3,349 prisoners have obtained the right to ask for the release on parole.

According to the law, the inmates can obtain six days of freedom for every 30 days of jail time served in improper detention conditions.
