The Supreme Court sentenced the Social Democrat MP Miron Mitrea to 2 years in prison in the corruption case regarding his mother’s house construction. Yet the ruling is not final.

Mitrea, ex-Transport minister during 200-2004, was charged with receiving RON 520,000 bribe, in the guise of construction workings for his mother’s place, in order to keep Irina Jianu as inspector general for the State Constructions Inspectorate.

In August 2008, deputies cast their votes against Mitrea’s immunity lift, so that prosecutors could investigate him. Yet, the Social Democrat resigned as deputy, arguing he came to this action so that he shouldn’t be accused anymore that he was hiding behind his parliamentary privilege. Subsequently, Mitrea won a senator seat (2008-2012) and a four-years mandate as a deputy in 2012, due until 2016.
