UPDATE: 21 roads were partially closed Monday morning. 12 trains and four flights – cancelled. Sun Motorway – partially open
A total of 21 roads were still closed Monday morning partly due to heavy snow, blizzards and low visibility, according to data released by CNADNR. The roads pass through Calarasi, Buzau, Ialomita, Constanta, Giurgiu, Galati, Tulcea, Vaslui and Vrancea.
The Sun Highway remains closed between Bucharest and Fetesti. Drivers are redirected to DN3.
At 7:00h, the Sun Highway was reopened between Bucharest and Lehliu, but remains closed from Lehliu to Fetesti, CNADNR informs.
12 trains were being cancelled Monday morning due to bad weather, according to a press release from CFR Passengers.
64 trains were cancelled from Sunday to Monday morning because of bad weather, according to the latest CFR information. Most trains were on routes to the southeast where on Sunday was in effect an Orange Code for blizzard and snow and which remain in effect until Monday evening as Orange Code for snow. On Sunday the trains registered huge delays of up to 3 hours.
The airport traffic was conducted with difficulties due to snow, ice on the runway and reduced visibility. Monday morning 4 flights from ‘Henri Coanda’ airport in the capital were cancelled, flights to Istanbul, Catania (Italy), Tel Aviv and Baia Mare.
Official data show airports throughout the country in Bucharest, Bacau, Cluj, Constanta, Craiova, Sibiu, Targu Mures, Timisoara, Iasi, Oradea, Satu Mare and Tulcea are operational, but face problems.
Power supply is interrupted in 53 municipalities in the area served by Enel Dobrogea and Enel Muntenia Sud, following damages to the network caused by the snowstorm, according to the communiqués issued by the two distribution companies on Monday.
Snow, blizzards block several national roads, rail and air traffic affected. Schools closed down on Monday. Bucharest, 8 counties under Yellow Code
The National Meteorology Administration (ANM) has extended the weather warnings on Sunday to Orange Code for blizzards and snowfalls to eight counties in south-eastern Romania and for Bucharest.
Until Sunday evening 18.00h the counties of Galati, Vrancea, Buzau, Braila, Ialomita, Calarasi, Constanta and Tulcea were to remain under Orange Code for strong wind, moderate snowfall and blizzard. Until the same hour a Yellow Code for snowfall and strong winds has been issued for Bucharest and eight counties in central, southern and eastern Romania, i.e. Iasi, Vaslui, Neamt, Bacau, Covasna, Prahova, Ilfov and Giurgiu.
During the next days the temperatures will fall drastically to minus 10, minus 15 degrees C.
Meanwhile, as of Sunday several national roads have been closed by snowfalls. The A2 motorway has been closed down between Bucharest and Fetesti, as well as national roads DN 2, DN 2C, DN 2B, DN 22 – din judeţul Buzău, DN 5B – in Giurgiu County, DN 23B, DN 2M – in Vrancea County and DN 41- in Călăraşi County.
Also, school classes in Bucharest and Ilfov, Ialomita, Giurgiu, Calarasi, Buzau, Tulcea and Vrancea counties will be suspended on Monday due to weather.
Air traffic has been affected on Sunday. Three flights to Istanbul, Moscow and Milan due to live from Otopeni Airport were cancelled, while other flights have had delays of up to 30 minutes and two hours due to the defrosting procedures.
Several national and county roads in Constanta County have been closed to traffic due to blizzards, 20 localities are without electric energy supply. Enel Dobrogea was working on Sunday to repair the electric network.
All maritime ports were closed on Sunday due to strong wind.
Several vehicles were trapped in snow in Ialomita County, due to snow, strong wind and low visibility. All county roads in Ialomita were closed down starting 11.00h on Sunday.
In Arges County no less than 30 localities had no electric power supply due to strong winds.
According to CFR Calatori, some 39 trains were cancelled on Sunday to and from Bucharest to Constanta, Fetesti, Slobozia, Calarasi, Buzau, Tulcea, Medgidia, Alexandria and Rosiori. Other trains on various routes register delays of up to two hours.
In Bucharest some 130 automobiles were damaged by falling branches and 191 trees and electricity poles were brought down by wind on the night of Saturday to Sunday. Traffic was rather difficult on Sunday on lots of streets in Bucharest, however no traffic jams were noticed. According to Bucharest City Hall some 349 snow removal equipments were on duty on main and secondary streets.
