Update – ‘Colectiv’ fire consequences: Nine injured have died on Saturday, death toll up to 41

Seven injured in the ‘Colectiv’ nightclub fire have died on Saturday in Romanian hospitals, while other two patients among those transported in the Netherlands, a Romanian and an Italian, died later on after arriving in the Netherlands. One of the injured that has died in the Netherlands was a young Italian girl, Tullia Ciotola, aged 20.

Two people injured in the ‘Colectiv’ nightclub conflagration have died during the night of Friday to Saturday at the Hospital for Burns, Secretary of State Raed Arafat has announced, the number of those who lost their lives in the tragedy reaching 34, digi24.ro informed on Saturday morning. Secretary of State with the Interior Ministry Raed Arafat said that the two people were hospitalized at the Hospital for Plastic Surgery and Burns Bucharest, stating he cannot offer further details at the time.

Minutes later Catalin Cirstoiu, the manager of the Universitar Hospital, has announced another injured man has passed away, bringing the death toll to 35. The manager of the Universitar Hospital said the man who died on Saturday had 27 years old and was in critical condition. His 27yo wife is also admitted to the same hospital, but she was recently detubated after she had been in serious condition for the past days. Cirstoiu said the man who died had serious bruns after he threw himself over his wife to save her.

Around 12:00, the doctor announced another person admitted to Floreasca Hospital in critical condition passed away. Later on, other two injured died, one at Floreasca Hospital, the other one, a young man, at the Hospital for Burns, the death toll reaching 39.

Later on in the evening, doctors reported another two deaths, according to Digi 24. A woman died at Floreasca Hospital and a man at Bagdasar Arseni Hospital.

Some one hundred people are admitted to several hospitals in Bucharest, others have been transported abroad for treatment. The interim PM, Sorin Cîmpeanu stated earlier in the morning that in Romania there are 107 more persons admitted in hospitals, 48 are in critical and serious condition.

The interim PM also announced that two planes of the Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD) have taken two wounded patients to Austria.

Military planes that carried other patients to Belgium and the Netherlands overnight will also return on Saturday and stand ready to transport more patients abroad, he added.

Cimpeanu thanked the countries that offered help, citing Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Austria, UK, Israel, Turkey and US, and mentioned that Hungary also offered to take five patients, while talks were in progress with Norway and Finland to take probably two wounded each.

Romania’s Embassy to Belgium informed the condition of the eight wounded patients who had been transferred to Brussels didn’t worsen, with three of them being seriously injured and five having medium injuries.

‘Goodbye to Gravity’ lead vocalist, sent to the Netherlands

Among the patients transported in the Netherlands for treatment is also the lead vocalist of “Goodbye to Gravity”, Andrei Galuț.

“Andrei arrived in Holland, he is hospital. God, thank you…now please, keep doing miracles and take care of all of them. Give strength to the doctors and to their parents,” wrote on Facebook the vocalist’s sister-in-law, Nicoleta Belean. Andrei Galuț is admitted to a hospital in the Dutch city of Beverwijk. His family appealed to the Romanians living in Holland to support Andrei’s mother, who accompanied his son there.

Andrei was admitted in serious condition at Elias Hospital. He had burns and suffered extreme intoxication, being mechanically ventilated.

President Iohannis wrote on Facebook: “My thought and soul go to the unconsoled families who received today the tragic news of their beloved ones’ disappearance. May God rest them in peace!”.
