Update: Former Constanta mayor Radu Mazare, remanded by Police in Madagascar for six days

Former mayor of Constanta Radu Mazare, has been remanded by the authorities in Madagascar, judicial sources inform on Wednesday.

Mazare is sentenced to 9 years in prison in the file regarding the retrocession of beaches, hotnews.ro.

Radu Mazare is in Madagascar since the end of 2017.

The Romanian Police General Inspectorate (IGPR) informs that the Madagascar authorities have announced the arrest of Radu Mazare.

“The Madagascar authorities have informed IGPR, through the International Police Cooperation Center, that a Romanian citizen, under international warrant for a 9-year jail sentence, has been remanded on May 8, for a period of six days,” IGPR informs, quoted by digi24.ro.

The Romanian Police has been in constant connection with the authorities in Madagascar, cooperating in view of finding and arresting the person under international warrant.

“The person under remand of the Madagascar authorities was sentenced by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, in 2017, for abuse of office in continued form and for setting up an organized criminal group,” the Police also inform.

The High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) sentenced Radu Mazare to 9 years in prison on February 8, 2019. The ruling is final. In the same file, businessman Cistian Borcea was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Mazare is charged, together with other public servants, of illegal awarding of land (beaches and cliffs in Constanta), with damages estimated by DNA at EUR 114 million. The court ruling came after 9 years of lawsuit and 8 successive postponements.

Last Friday, former mayor of Constanta, Radu Mazare, was sentenced to 9 years and 10 months imprisonment in the Polaris file, but the ICCJ sentence may be appealed to the 5-judge panel. In the same file, millionaire Sorin Strutinsky was sentenced to 7 years and 10 months imprisonment and former PSD deputy Eduard Martin to 5 years and 6 months imprisonment, ziare.com reported.

The High Court also decided to confiscate from Radu Mazare and from Sorin Strustinsky the amount of RON 20,410,256.8.
