Another two people have died due to influenza, a 70-year-old man from Timis County and a 71-year-old woman from Bucharest. Both had pre-existing medical conditions and were not vaccinated against the flu, the National Institute for Public Health informs.

A 75-year-old woman from Caras-Severin County has also died at the Emergency Municipal Hospital in Caransebeş because of the flu. The woman had not been vaccinated, the Caraş-Severin the Directorate for Public Health has announced. The number of victims has reached 28.

Concerned, doctors have restricted or forbid visits to hospitals. Unprecedented measures have also been taken in schools and kindergartens. Teachers recommend parents with sick children to keep them away from collectivities.

Quarantine at Sibiu Pediatric Hospital: at least 44 children diagnosed with influenza

Hospital quarantine was instituted at the Sibiu Pediatric Hospital: no less than 44 children have been diagnosed with flu, digi24.ro reports.

According to DSP Sibiu, the first two flu cases in Sibiu County have been confirmed by the laboratory this season. In other 44 cases, rapid tests were made that turned positive for influenza, the representatives of the Sibiu Hospital said.

In Sibiu County, the number of acute respiratory infections has significantly increased (3,236) in the previous week, by about 40% compared to the previous week’s reported cases (2304). The number is by 77.12% higher than the same week of the 2017-2018 season.

Health Minister Sorina Pintea declared last Friday that “we are on the brink of an epidemic.”

“We are on the brink of an epidemic. Last week, the number of people confirmed with flu exceeded the estimated number of cases,” the Health Minister said in an interview with Realitatea TV private broadcaster.

“If we have three weeks of fly spreading, we can declare the epidemic. The situation is concerning, we estimate an increase in the number of cases,” she said.

The number of virus infections is exceeding 90,000 countrywide, which is by 21% more against the same week last season. 268 cases of flu have been confirmed since the start of the season.

If the confirmed cases of influenza exceed the number of estimated cases in one week, authorities might declare an epidemic.
