Why do Romanians leave the country? – survey upon the request of Dancila cabinet

About 20% of active Romanians, aged 20-64, live and work in an European state, a survey conducted by the Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS) reads, survey requested by Romania on the context of the presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The document was discussed by the informal meeting of the EU Finance Ministers during the weekend, ziare.com informs.

Romania has the highest share of citizens working in a European state, i.e. 19.7% in the context in which the European average is 4%. The figures have been provided by Eurostat.

Shares in other countries: Lithuania – 14.8%, Croatia – 13.9% and Portugal – 13.8%. At the other end are Germany – 1%, UK – 1.1% and France 1.3%.

In countries like Romania, the outflow was of about 1% per year and of 1.5% in certain years.

A survey conducted by the European Commission in 2018 revealed that Romania is source for almost half of the medical assistance migration to the EU, with Italy as main destination. Thus, Romania has the lowest density of physicians.

Among the reasons for leaving the county there are the higher wages and jobs easier to find, followed by others, such as the quality of institutions – important for the qualified migrants. For those unqualified the social assistance payments are also important. The expectations in terms of individual achievements are important in making the decision to leave the home country.
