Sometra invests USD 40 M in a new ’green’ production unit in Copsa Mica

Sometra, part of Mytilineos, the largest industrial organization in Greece, will invest in Romania USD 40 million in the development of a new, environment-friendly production facility in Copsa Mica, to be built on the site of the nonferrous metals plant near the locality in central Transylvania, a press release informs.

The new production facility will be built from scratch on the current location of the plant which has significantly reduced the activity, by stopping the most polluting part of production, since 2009 amid the effects of the economic crisis which has affected, at the time, the entire Romanian industry.

Now, Sometra is about to conduct a greenfield investment which will lead to the recycling of the 3 million tons of slag waste accumulated in the 70+ years of production, this time in totally new conditions of environmental protection, to eliminate the landfill slag left behind at the facility. The technology to be employed allows ecological recycling, and the transformation of the landfill slag into two saleable products: Waelz oxides and slag (clinker Waelz).

“Following an investment of USD 3 million in research and development already, we reached the conclusion that it is possible and economically feasible to eliminate the 3 million tons of slag waste and turn them into products for export and internal market. The plan is to begin operations in 2020, and will involve the processing of the landfill slag, respectively by internal recycling using its own production capacities”, Ing. Christos Efstathiadis, General Manager for Sometra SA Copsa Mica, said.

The management of Sometra estimates that the existing slag will be recycled in about 13 years of production, and for the period afterwards, the business plan foresees the transformation of the facility into recycling services provider for the other industrial facilities in Romania.

According to Efstathiadis, the new investment in Copsa Mica is for recycling and will not pollute the environment.

Sometra currently employs 25 people and will hire another 50, reaching a total of 75 employees when it will become fully operational, after receiving the environmental permit.
