The Night of Museums 2017 is running this Saturday, with 145 museums and partners opening their gates in 45 cities from the country, offering free access to visitors. All museums and other partner institutions will be open until midnight, and some of them will remain open after midnight as well. In Bucharest, the subway will remain open during the night.

The National Museum of Art in Bucharest has its gates open from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The National Museum of Romanian Aviation is open from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., with visitors being able to see the main exhibition presenting the history of the aeronautics from the start till 1959. The museum will display patterns of some planes made by those three pioneers of the Romanian aviation: Traian Vuia, Aurel Vlaicu and Henri Coandă.

ARCEN is opening to the wide public two historical locations in Icoanei District in the Capital, Scoala Central (Central School), a former boarding school for girls, and one of King Michael’s houses, the current HQ of Scena 9 magazine. The two buildings are in the same area and can be visited for reading sessions on a hourly basis, for theatre performances in the Scena9 building’s attic and for dance in the Central School’s courtyard.

The Bellu Cemetery, where great Romanian artists and writers are buried, will be hosting jazz and classic recitals, as well as Taxi Blues theatre performance. Guided tours will be also available inside the cemetery, as of 7 p.m.

For the people passionate about sculpture, Constantin Brancusi’s “Child head” sculpture will be on display at the Old Western Art Museum.

The Night of Museums will see a new museum inaugurated in Bucharest. Muzeu 3017 is the exhibition opened at the Nod Makerspace, proposing a glimpse from the future back to the Bucharest of the year 2017. The exhibition is dedicated to an anthropological research on the living in Bucharest in the past 70 years: photos, interview with Bucharesters, items, statistics and plans.

The Night of Museums Café is the first café space dedicated to this famous annual event and will be opened at the Museum of Maps and Old Map in Bucharest. The café will enable discussions with museum experts, with ordinary people being able to get actively involved by offering suggestions related to museums.

In the country, the range of the institutions joining the Night of Museums is even wider.

Bran Castle in Brasov, the most visited tourist sight in Romania, has free access on May 20, from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The Tower of Tailors and Dacia Cinema in Cluj-Napoca are open from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., offering visitors the opportunity of meeting knights and princesses dressed up in medieval outfits.

Casino in Cluj will host a photo exhibition. Opening hours: 8 p.m.- 3 a.m.

The National Union Museum in Alba-Iulia will reveal a parade of historical characters and a workshop for painting icons, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Astra National Museum in Sibiu is open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. and proposes several special events, with the strong point of the night being the Phoenix band’s performance as of 10 p.m.

However, the event is shadowed by the announced protest of the museum employees in Romania, following their discontent over their low wages.
