Bucharest Therme, officially opened
Bucharest Therme, the largest thermal complex in Europe, opened on Thursday in a exclusive complex located near Balotești, northern Bucharest. The greenfield project stretches on an area of 250,000 square meters, sheltering an indoor area of 30,000 square meters and a capacity of 4,000 people.
Besides the pools, over 800,000 plants, most of them rarities or singularities, recreate the scenery of a tropical vacation the whole year, also turning the center into the largest indoor and outdoor botanical garden in Romania. Thus, the center hosts the biggest authentic palm plantation in Europe, with almost 500,000 specimens (25 species brought from Florida, USA, Malaysia and Thailand), but also an absolute unique attraction: a specimen of the Life Tree.
“Therme Bucharest is designed for a seismic magnitude of 9 degrees on the Richter scale. We expect between 800,000 and 1 million visitors in the first year. The facility has an extremely high energy efficiency, and its energy independence is ensured 320 out of 365 days a year. In terms of energy efficiency, Therme Bucharest runs on its own resources to an extent of 90 percent,” the center manager Stelian Iacob said.
Bucharest thus advances to Europe’s second largest thermal city after the oldest historically documented thermal city on the continent, Rome.
The pools will be supplied with thermal water brought from 3,100 meters deep, following the deepest water drilling made in Romania after 1989. The water temperature will be 33 Celsius degrees, while the air temperature will mount to 29, 30 Celsius degrees. In an unprecedented move, the Spa & Wellness area is represented by the six customized saunas and a steam bath.
