International Women’s Choir embraces all levels of singing ability without audition. Though it can be a challenge to work with amateur singers to have two annual concerts, one in summer and the other in winter, the weekly serious rehearsals led by Georgeta Popescu who is a professor, piano accompanist, ex-opera singer and stage director sculpted the voices into harmony. Belonging to the international business and diplomatic communities, all of the choir members pursued or still pursue not-music-related career such as marketing consultant, company owner, engineer, graphic designer, art historian, psychologist, model, flower designer, sommelier, teacher etc but share the love of music as a common ground. The choir director, Strella Ahn, who holds MBA from Duke University in US, used to be a marketing specialist of a Fortune 500 global firm and an ex-IWA Vice President has planned and organized the annual concerts while recruiting professional soloists who are willing to join in a charity cause. Hospice Casa Sperantei is a chosen beneficiary of this Christmas Charity Concert. The Hospice provides a palliative care for the dying from terminal, rare and life-limiting illness and the donation from the audience will help them live every remaining moment with dignity, alongside with the family.

There are three invited professional soloists for this Christmas Charity concert. The Dutch mezzo soprano Anne Marieke Evers studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and is specialized in oratorio repertoire such as J.S. Bach, C.P.E Bach, Saint Saens, Vivaldi, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Strawinsky. She sang in opera productions such as Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell in the title role and in L’Enfant et les Sortileges by Maurice Ravel (Tasse Chinoise). In 2016 she made her debut with the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra (David Shemer, musical director) in a St. Matthew Passion in Jerusalem with 8 singers under the baton of Joshua Rifkin.  Alexandru Nuca from Romania holds multiple titles with amazing musical dexterity and sensitivy. He is a bandoneon, guitar and keyboard player, singer, composer and producer. He is self taught, in love with music and visual arts, cinematographer, screenwriter who wrote two full length feature films screenplays. Lastly but not the least, Jong-Soo Jung is the first graduate of the panflute specialization in South Korea. He is currently a Master’s degree student at the National University of Music from Bucharest (Universitatea Naţională de Muzică Bucureşti) and also a student of Gheorghe Zamfir known as “the Master of the Panflute”. The concert also will present instrumental and vocal solo performances by the current choir members including Georgeta Popescu(soprano), Strella Ahn(flute), Corina Zumbei(piano) and Todorka Balcheva(vocal jazz).
