Cultural events mark 35th anniversary of Berlin Wall’s fall

This fall will mark a great event dedicated to freedom, namely: the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, marked on November 9. At the same time, in 2025 the 200th anniversary of Berlin’s Museum Island will be celebrated. Thus, during the years 2024 and 2025, numerous artistic and cultural events will take place, as well as other important anniversaries – 20 years since the establishment of the Festival of Lights, 55 years since the inauguration of the Berlin Television Tower, 25 years since the establishment of the C/O Berlin museum and 50 years since the foundation of the Berlinische Galerie. All this will turn the city into a pole of attraction for tourists from all over the world.

35 years since the fall of the wall – 35 years since Berlin is the city of freedom

The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 was one of the most important events in recent history, opening a new chapter of freedom for the German capital. A wide range of events and ceremonies, attended by high-profile international guests, are scheduled for the fall of 2024. The spectacular poster installation, located along the former route of the Wall in the city center, will be inaugurated around 9 November 2024. There will also be exhibitions, workshops, discussions and guided tours. The East Side Gallery, the world’s longest open-air gallery, will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2025.

The sound of freedom: Berlin’s techno part of the UNESCO Cultural Heritage

For several decades, Berlin’s clubs have turned the city into a coveted destination and a magnet for nightlife lovers from around the world. Techno club culture perfectly reflects current trends and is recognized as part of the UNESCO Cultural Heritage. Techno music became the soundtrack to the optimistic spirit that took off after the fall of the Wall, according to the award’s motivation.

Highlights of 2025: 200 years since the founding of Berlin’s famous Museum Island

Next year, Berlin will welcome its guests with numerous attractions. The capital will mark the 200th anniversary of Museum Island, located in the heart of the city. This event will celebrate the beginning of the construction of the Old Museum, which took place in 1825. The Museum Island, part of the UNESCO world heritage, is home to five famous museums, including the New Museum (Neues Museum) and the Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie).

The artistic highlights of 2025 in Berlin

Among the cultural highlights of 2025 are two Kandinsky exhibitions to be held in Berlin and Potsdam. Between February 27 and June 15, 2025, the Kupferstichkabinett Museum in Berlin will present an impressive collection of the Blauer Reiter artistic group, which includes works in watercolour, drawings and engravings.

At the same time, between February 27 and May 10, 2025, the Barberini Museum in Potsdam will host the exhibition “Kandinsky Cosmos. Geometric abstraction in the 20th century”. More than 100 works by renowned artists will illustrate how Kandinsky’s works influenced the development of a new visual language. Ten works by Wassilij Kandinsky will also be on display, all on high-value loans, including from the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

The 50th anniversary of the Berlinische Galerie will be dedicated to Raoul Hausmann, one of the leaders of the 20th century Dada movement. The exhibition will also include photographs, which can be admired at the renowned C/O Berlin on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

From September 14, C/O Berlin will present the exhibition “Dream on – Berlin, the 90s”, which documents the tumultuous years after German reunification. Other major events in 2025 include the 75th Berlinale, the International Film Festival (February 13-23), the Carnival of Cultures (June 6-9) and Christopher Street Day (July 26). Berlin, a tourist spot also for Romanian tourists

visitBerlin promotes tourism in Berlin worldwide, including in Romania. The importance of Romania as a key market for Berlin is highlighted by tourism statistics: in 2023, over 26,700 Romanian tourists visited Berlin, spending 85,500 nights in the city’s hotels. This represents an 11% increase in the number of overnight stays compared to previous years.
