Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in New York City, in 1985. The band consists of guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, singer James LaBrie, keyboard player Jordan Rudess and drummer Mike Mangini, according to imdb.com. Previous members include Mike Portnoy, Derek Sherinian, Kevin Moore and Charlie Dominici. Since making their debut in 1989 with “When Dream and Day Unite”, the band has released 13 studio albums, including the concept albums “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory” (1999) and “The Astonishing” (2016).

The band was originally formed under the name Majesty. However, at that time there already was another band called Majesty, so they had to change it. After testing a few unsuccessful names, Mike Portnoy’s father suggested “Dream Theater”, which was the name of an old movie theater in Monterey, California. The band liked it, and they have been Dream Theater ever since.
