Enescu 2024: Open Rehearsals for Conducting Masterclass by Cristian Măcelaru

Conductor Cristian Măcelaru, the artistic director of the George Enescu Festival and International Competition, included, for the first time in the program of the George Enescu International Competition, a masterclass in conducting interpretation and deepening the study of music.

Of the 42 conductors from 22 countries who applied for this masterclass, only 6 qualified and will arrive in Bucharest, and the masterclass sessions that will take place at the Romanian Academy between September 23 and 26, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., will be open to the public, subject to the availability of places provided by the organizer.

The event is held under the High Patronage of the President of Romania and is a cultural project financed by the Government of Romania through the Ministry of Culture.

45 conductors from 22 countries such as Italy, Australia, South Korea, Greece, South Africa, USA, Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong, France, Romania, China, Germany, Poland, Morocco, Netherlands, Brazil, Croatia, Macedonia of the North, Spain, Singapore and Switzerland applied for active participation in the first edition of the conducting interpretation masterclass led by maestro Cristian Măcelaru in the 19th edition of the George Enescu International Competition, but only two conductors and four conductors between the ages of 24 and 34 were selected to take the lectern of the Romanian Youth Orchestra, in the first edition of the Masterclass.

Conductors Eu-Lee Nam (South Korea, 34 years old) and Ana Spasovska (North Macedonia, 25 years old), together with Kyrian Friedenberg (USA, 25 years old), Omar El Jamali (Morocco, 32 years old), Harris Han (USA, 24 years old) and Alex Amsel (USA, 33 years old) are the 6 young people selected to work with maestro Cristian Măcelaru and the Romanian Youth Orchestra for a week in Bucharest, from September 23 to 27, 2024.

Following the operating model of the George Enescu International Competition, inspired by the life of the artist whose name it bears, the masterclass in conducting, instrumental interpretation and in-depth study of music represents a platform where young musicians, instrumentalists or conductors, are guided in the development of a career of success in the field of classical music, by practicing and improving interpretation and communication skills.

Friday, September 27, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., at the Romanian Academy, three of the six conductors participating in the masterclass of conducting interpretation and deepening in the study of music will climb to the lectern of the Romanian Youth Orchestra to conduct, alongside maestro Cristian Măcelaru , the closing concert of the George Enescu International Competition.
The program will feature works from the universal Romanian-French repertoire, in a musical royal that will include works by George Enescu, Dan Dediu, Hector Berlioz, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky.
