As Romania is the guest of honor of the edition this year of the International Book Fair in Leipzig (March 15-18), 20 German journalists are in Bucharest these days, representing the most important media institutions in Germany: ZDF, Deutsche Welle, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Tagesspiegel, Der Spiegel and Leipziger Volkszeitung.

The German delegation came at the invitation of the Association of the Publishers in Romania, to prepare the programme of Romania’s presence at the book fair in Leipzig.

On Monday and Tuesday, the delegation of the German journalists will attend cultural events that are designed to help them better understand the contemporary Romanian literary landscape and the local book market, a press release informs. At the same time, the German journalists plan to interview several Romanian contemporary writers, to provide the German readers with an introspection of those over 50 events which are high on Romania’s agenda at the upcoming Leipzig Fair.

The Romanian literary scene is said to be very alive. However, there is no much information about it in Germany. This situation must change, along with Romania’s presence as guest of honor of the Leipzig International Book Fair, 2018 edition. We, the journalists, are very curious: of course we know Mircea Cartarescu’s powerful writing. We also know Nora Iuga, who had reading sessions in Leipzig. But who are the other Romanian contemporary writers? What are they writing about? How are they tackling the traumas of the 20th century from the literary perspective? What is their attitude towards the clichés about Romania? How they are ranked in Europe? And moreover, what this Europe means? It seems that Romania is a European partner about which Germany hardly knows. Literature can build these bridges,” said Bartlick, cultural journalists Deutsche Welle TV.

The next preview project at the Leipzig fair this year is the mini-Romanian film festival. Under the motto„Leaving (to) Romania”, ten Romanian films (feature films and documentaries) will be screened at the famous UT Connewitz cinema hall in Leipzig during February 26-March 13.
