“La Gomera”, eligible to be nominated for the European Film Awards
Romanian film director Corneliu Porumboiu’s fifth feature film, “La Gomera, is on the list of those 46 productions eligible to be nominated at the European Film Awards, dubbed as the European Oscars, which are due in Berlin on December 7.
“La Gomera” has been shortlisted in the competition and had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival this year. The film critics described the movie as a dark comedy.
Besides Cannes, the film was selected at Sydney FF, Festival International de La Rochelle, Vukovar Film Festival, New Zealand IFF, Jerusalem FF, New Horizons IFF, Montenegro FF Herceg Novi, Melbourne IFF, Serajevo IFF, Varna FF and Toronto IFF.
In Romania, “La Gomera” has been presented at TIFF and at Anonimul International Independent Film Festival.
“La Gomera” is the first Romanian movie directed by Porumboiu that was shot abroad, in Spain and Singapore.
Vlad Ivanov, Catrinel Marlon (Menghia), Rodica Lazăr, Sabin Țambrea, Julieta Szönyi, George Piștereanu, István Teglas, Agustí Villaronga, Cristóbal Pinto and Antonio Buíl are starring.
Vlad Ivanov plays Cristi, a Romanian corrupt policeman involved in a EUR 30 million business with the Mafia. He reaches La Gomera island in Spain to learn „El Silbo”, a whistle language used by the locals. The coded language is meant to help Cristi release Zsolt (Țambrea) from prison. Szolt is a trafficker imprisoned in Bucharest and who is the only one who knows where the money is hidden.
“La Gomera” is a co-production 42 KM FILM- Les Films du Worso (France), Komplizen Film (Germany) and Arte Grand Accord. The international sales agent is MK2 Films. The movie has been sold in 27 territories, including in North America, China, India, South America, Northern and Central Africa, UK, France and Spain.
La Gomera will hit the theaters in Romania on September 13.
The nominations for the European Film Awards will be released on November 9.
