Mircea Cartarescu gets the “Thomas Mann” Award for Literature in 2018
Romanian writer Mircea Cartarescu received the “Thomas Mann” Award for Literature in 2018, one of the biggest German literary awards, buchmarkt.de informs.
“I just received with great excitement the news that I am the winner of the ’Thomas Mann’ Prize for Literature in 2018. I am very grateful to the jury, but also to the Bavarian Academy and the City of Lübeck, that will award me this prize,” Cartarescu wrote on Facebook.
According to the Zsolnay Publishing House, the prize is worth EUR 25,000 and will be handed over on November 17 at a ceremony at the Lübeck Theater.
”In the last four decades, Mircea Cartarescu became the most important voice in Romanian literature, first through his volumes of poetry, then through novels, stories and essays, with his unusual, polyphonic romantic trilogy, <<Orbitor>>, the writer enrolling in world literature,” the jury’s motivation reads.
