More than 30 feature films enter the race for nominations at Gopo Awards 2024

The 18th edition of the Gopo Awards, the annual event that celebrates and rewards the achievements of Romanian cinema, will take place on April 29 at the National Theatre, I.L. Caragiale” from Bucharest. The organizers announce the opening of the call for entries for the documentary and short film categories, the deadline for entries being February 5, 2024.

33 feature films, fiction films and documentaries released in cinemas during 2023 meet the eligibility criteria and will be able to be judged and nominated at the Gopo Awards 2024. Romanian films produced in Romania or made in a co-production regime, but with majority Romanian participation, which had their national premiere between January 1 and December 31, 2023 and which benefited from at least one week of broadcast in cinema halls, with access based on a ticket, as well as those which had their premiere on a streaming platform, will be judged by 11 professionals from the film industry, who will make up the Gopo Awards 2024 jury. Nominations will be announced in March.

Among the productions eligible for the title of Best Romanian Film are films presented and awarded in major national and international festivals, such as Don’t Expect Too Much from the End of the World (dir. Radu Jude), which had its world premiere at the International Film Festival from Locarno, where he was awarded the Silver Leopard – Special Jury Prize, Mention from the Ecumenical Jury and First Prize from the Youth Jury; Freedom (dir. Tudor Giurgiu) presented in the world premiere at TIFF 2023, awarded with the Award of the International Confederation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) at the Sarajevo Film Festival; MMXX directed by Cristi Puiu, which had its world premiere at the official San Sebastian Competition.

The list also includes successful films such as Taximetristi/Taxi drivers (dir. Bogdan Theodor Olteanu), feature films directed by Jesús del Cerro – Miami Bici 2 and Ramon, as well as acclaimed and award-winning documentaries such as Between Revolutions, the film by director Vlad Petri, awarded at the Festivalul Berlin International Film Festival with FIPRESCI – the International Federation of Film Critics Award and during the Romanian Film Days at TIFF 2023 with the award for Feature Film and the FIPRESCI Award. Among the eligible documentaries are Arsenie.Viata de apoi / Arsenie de Afterlife (dir. Alexandru Solomon) and Why is my name Nora, when my sky is sunny (dir. Carla Teaha) or Playback (dir. Iulia Rugină).

Call for entries for the documentary and short film sections

For the Best Documentary Film category (only in the case of films that have not benefited from screenings in cinemas for more than a week), it is necessary to register Romanian films that premiered during 2023 and that have not benefited from distribution in the cinema circuit, but they were presented on TV or in the festival circuit (national or international). Television reports are not eligible for the documentary film category.

Romanian productions that premiered on the big screens, on TV or in at least one competitive festival (national or international) during the year 2023 are eligible for the Best Short Film category. In order for them to be considered by the jury which will decide the nominations, registration by producers is mandatory.

Registration takes place between January 16, 2024 and February 5, 2024. Nominations in all categories will be determined in March by a preselection jury made up of 11 professionals from the cinematographic field. After the announcement of the nominations, more than 650 active professionals from all areas of the domestic film industry will vote.
